Our History

By Gabriel Satinoff

The chess club first started in about five years ago in 1999. It was started by a man named Mark Satinoff. He got in touch with a chess organization called chess in the schools. They said that they would send over a chess teacher to teach the students to play chess. The teacher they sent over was Miguel Iniguez <who works for a year>. He started teaching the elementary grades first then teaching the middle school.
<The Renaissance Charter School decides to continues the chess classes after Chess in the Schools left in 2001, and hired back Miguel>
Miguel started the chess club with the help of Hannah Li, Mark Satinoff and Mitchell Fitzko. The club was split into two groups one group for the advanced chess players and one for the starters. After a while Miguel decided to also start teaching the kindergarteners and first graders how to play chess. At first it was a little hard, but after a while they got the hang of it. Now some of those kindergarteners are in first and second grade and still playing chess.

The chess club <this year is teaching by Miguel and Jairo, a FIDE Master> is after school every week on Friday from 3:30 to 5:00. If you would like to sign up for the chess club just go to the office and ask Hannah Li or leave your name, age and grade in the mailbox of Miguel (chess teacher). The chess club welcomes everybody to come no matter what age, grade or level. During the school year there will also be tournaments that anybody can attend. So if you would like to learn or become better at playing chess please feel free to sign up.
