The PDS K-3 Team garnered 2nd place overall in the 40th Annual Greater New York Championship held last Saturday, January 28, 2006 losing in the final round to The Dalton School by one (1) point.  It was a hard fought tournament and everyone did a fantastic job. The parents were wonderful.  From Jack, Don and John manning the temporary command center on the second floor to bring the kids up to the team room, to Gigi and Debbie providing the financial and logistical support as well as to Beth and Gayle providing the suprise of the evening. Miguel was excellent as the kid's coach and Bonnie was present up to the late rounds.  Light was able to make it to the last round and the awardings too. But the the kids were the story.  Everyone was tremendous in their demeanor and behavior as well as in their chess skills.  Gillian, Kenny, Michael, Danny, DJ, Liam, Noam and Joel  - great kids on and off the boards. This was the first time that PDS sent a team to this tournament and other schools  noticed that we have a very good team and a very good chess program.  I was approached more than once by veteran chess parents asking me why this was the first time they were seeing our kids in NY tournaments since it was apparent that our kids can play.  Probably the best compliment made to PDS chess was the next day when I overheard a parent checking out the K-6 Tournament Varsity Players list and she noticed Joel's name entered.  She said "Oh no, PDS is playing this tournament too...".
